Resource packs vs behavior packs in Minecraft

Understand the difference between Minecraft resource packs and behavior packs so your Bedrock add-ons load correctly.

Resource packs change what you see

Resource packs (RP) hold textures, language files, sounds, and client entity files. If you paint a new sword icon, that PNG and the item_texture.json atlas live in the resource pack.

Behavior packs change what the game does

Behavior packs (BP) hold item components (damage, food, wearable slots), block hardness, recipes, loot, and entity AI. Without a behavior pack, a pretty texture never becomes a usable item.

Why Blocksmith always exports both

Minecraft needs matching UUIDs and format_version headers in each manifest. Blocksmith writes a paired RP and BP into one .mcaddon so players install a single file. If you later split packs for a realm, keep the UUIDs stable across versions.

Put this into practice — paint a custom item and export a .mcaddon.
